Every year, moms tell me, “My son probably won’t be into senior pictures.”
And every year… those sessions turn into some of my favorites.
Andrew’s senior guy portraits in Elizabeth City, NC, were exactly that kind of session — easygoing, relaxed, and honestly just fun from start to finish.
Starting at the School — Where It Feels Natural
We started at the high school where he plays drums in the band. The moment a senior has something familiar in their hands, everything changes. No awkward standing around and no forced smiles — just natural movement and personality showing up on its own.
Comfort always leads the session, and when guys have something to do instead of being told to pose, the photos look real without trying.

Next, we headed into Elizabeth City and stopped at the record store, where he pulled out his guitar. This part of the session felt completely different — laid back and confident.
Each location brings out another side of their personality, and this stop fit him perfectly without constant direction.
Then he changed into a suit…
It completely elevated the session. One outfit shift can turn senior photos from casual memories into images that feel timeless. We photographed inside Seven Sounds first and then finished the evening with his truck, which honestly tied the whole session together perfectly. From band, to music, to dressed up, to truck — it told his whole story without forcing anything.
That’s why I always tell parents, senior guy sessions don’t need to be complicated. They just need to feel real. When you include things they’re already into, they relax, and the photos look natural rather than posed.
And truthfully, senior guys are some of the easiest to photograph. They don’t overthink it. They show up and leave, saying it was way easier than they expected.
So if you’ve been putting off booking your son’s senior pictures because you think he won’t enjoy it, he probably will. Especially when the session is built around him.
